2008 Tony Calendar
The weeks leading up to the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® each spring are the most exciting time of the year on Broadway. There are lots of events for celebrities and fans alike. Here's a list of this year's official Tony events, along with some of the other theatrical happenings that take place during Tony time.
UPCOMING EVENTS Fall 2008 The Tony Honors Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre recognize the achievements of individuals and organizations that do not fit into any of the 27 competitive categories. The Tony Honors are bestowed in the autumn at a ceremony that gives recipients a special moment in the spotlight.
PAST EVENTS May 13 Nominations Announcement Past Tony-winners David Hyde Pierce and Sara Ramirez announced the 2008 nominations. The nominations announcement is sponsored by IBM.
May 14 Nominees' Press Reception The nominees faced the press and grabbed a bite before heading off to their Wednesday matinees. We were there with cameras and microphones. You can now watch videos of the nominees, and get podcasts.
May 19 American Theatre Wing Spring Gala The stars came out at Cipriani 42nd Street to honor composer/lyricist Jerry Herman and Visa. June 13 Macy's "There’s a Little Bit of Broadway in Me" Contest Final Round The final round of a national in-store talent contest. Contestants sang Broadway songs before a panel of judges in order to be selected the winner. Winners from each participating Macy*s regional stores were flown to New York City to participate in the final competition, where the Grand Prize was awarded to the winner. At Macy's Herald Square. Through June 14 Free Exhibition New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Tony Awards presented "Writing to Character: Songwriters & the Tony Awards." The exhibition, held at the Lincoln Center library, spotlighted the more than 70 Broadway shows that have won Tonys for either Best Musical or Best Score. More... June 7-15 (check local listings) Visa Signature Tony Awards Preview Concert The stars come out on a TV special that previews the 2008 Tonys, hosted by Mario Lopez. The event includes concert-style numbers from the season's 12 new musical productions, up-close and personal interviews with some of this year's Tony nominees, and a look at all the shows currently running on Broadway. Get broadcast schedule, or check local listings for broadcast dates on CBS affiliates across the country. June 15 62nd Annual Tony Awards It's Broadway's night of nights! Whoopi Goldberg hosts the 2008 Tony Awards ceremony, which will be telecast nationally from the stage at Radio City Music Hall® at 8:00 p.m./7c. on CBS. Red Carpet Our live Tony night webcast begins at 6:00 p.m. with Red Carpet coverage in partnership with NY1 News. You'll get to meet the stars as they arrive at Radio City.
Live Webcast: Pre-Telecast Awards Then, at approximately 7:10, we'll bring you the pre-telecast portion of the Tony ceremony in an exclusive webcast live from Radio City, hosted by past winners Michael Cerveris and Julie White. You'll get to see what happens on stage before the television cameras start to roll, including live coverage of the awards handed out during this segment of the ceremony. More...
The Telecast The main event begins at 8/7c on CBS. Stay logged in all evening for complete backstage coverage of the awards, including minute-by-minute updates, our press room blog (in partnership with MyBroadway.com), extensive photo galleries, and video clips of interviews with winners and presenters. June 15 "Working in Theatre" Marathon on CUNY-TV The American Theatre Wing's panel discussion series Working in the Theatre (formerly The American Theatre Wing Seminars) brings together performers, directors, playwrights, designers, choreographers and behind-the-scenes personnel from the Broadway theatre. CUNY-TV will broadcast a special marathon of past programs in honor of the Tonys, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Cable channel 75 in NYC, or CUNY.tv. Get schedule. |
